Wilson has a new hobby--BMX racing. It happened rather suddenly and unexpectedly, as this is a kid who, if he thinks anyone is looking at him, will start making strange animal noises and hit whoever is closest. (You should have seen him dive under the bench when the kids were called up to sing for Father's Day in Sacrament meeting yesterday!) So for him to voluntarily engage in a competition of any kind is very strange to us! A couple of months ago he went to watch his best little friend Dane race his bike. Zane took Wilson to the track with his own bike nice and early, in hopes of nobody being there so Wils could take a couple of fun laps in solitude. Well, long story short (too late!), Wilson ended up entering the race, taking first place and coming home with a two-foot tall trophy! So, since then he has raced every week and continues to come home with giant trophies, as he and his pal take turns winning first and second place. Every week we get stalked by BMX race-obsessed parents who try to shame us into buying Wilson a new bike (in the picture you can see the correct racing bike on the left, and Wilson on his regular ol' little dirt bike). We have actually had people essentially tell us that we are holding our son back by not getting him the right gear! (I did go check out these little bikes and they will eventually set us back about $400...) My feeling is, as long as he's still winning the slick bike can wait!
Here's the boy in action--his race starts about 45 seconds into the clip.
