Annual Pilgrimage

Today Eliza, Wilson and I made our annual trek up the hill to "the cross'. If you live in Boise, or have visited you will know what I am talking about--the huge metal cross on top of the plateau in the foothills known as Table Rock. The cross lights up at night (powered by solar panels) and can be seen all across the valley. A few years ago there was a big ta-doo about removing the cross, so as to not offend any non-believers, but it was quickly squelched by a Christian group armed with strong opinions and "Save the Cross" bumper stickers. It is definitely a Boise icon.

Every summer the kids and I make a list of things we want to do during the summer, and hike to the cross is always on it. We have to pick a morning that is cool, as the whole hike is exposed and hot. Today was perfect--about 75 and breezy. So we made it up and had lots of Meadowlarks to listen to. Sometimes we see a coyote or a fox but not today. The kids rode their imaginary horses all the way up and even convinced me to ride mine (and I ask you, my fellow adults, when was the last time you "galloped"?? Give it a try when nobody is looking and amaze yourself with how not easy it is!).

It was a good time and I always look out over the city (which you can see in the background of the pic) and think about how lucky we are to live in this great valley. (My second most frequent thought was thank heavens for the guy who invented the Camelbak!)
