Weekend Update

I once read in a book that many teachers are oldest children. That makes complete sense--oldest children (especially girls) are bossy, pedantic and want everyone to be organized and behaving well. (This same article suggested using the word "guide" in place of "teacher". Probably the same folks who say "toilet teaching" instead of "potty training". Ugh) Anyway, as I was telling a friend today, I come from a long line of bossy and organized oldest daughters. My Eliza, following in those same footsteps, is constantly creating ways for us to "have fun" in our home, only we have to "have fun" *exactly* the way she wants us to. No opinions or suggestions are accepted, and if we don't all perform the way she wants, ugliness ensues.

The Hostess

The Contestants

Last night she made a game called, "So You Think You Can Spell". Clever, I thought. She set up a game show set in our basement and Zane and I competed for points by spelling words that Eliza picked, such as cauliflower, penitentiary, bourgeoisie and diarrhea. It was actually quite impressive, she had a power point presentation that told us to take our seats, and to follow directions *exactly*. She had a little sound byte of people cheering too. She is a teacher in the making, no doubt!

Last night we had a piano recital at our house for Eliza and her neighborhood girlfriends who have been coming here for lessons. They performed wonderfully, and looked beautiful. Check out the pretty flowers that one of the moms brought. The girls were nervous, but survived, and are already talking about their next performance.

Pretty *and* talented!

The forecast is for sun and low 80s, BSU beat Fresno State and the Sox swept the Orioles. What more could we ask for? (Although we do secretly root for the Orioles a little bit when Jeremy Guthrie is pitching. Wilson must have asked me three times during Friday's game, "Who do you hope wins, the Red Sox or the Orioles?" I would answer that for this particular game, I would be happy with either one, and he would say, "Me too", sounding relieved of the burden of betraying his team.)
And did I say I was never going to be ready for fall? Tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox, and Boise couldn't be prettier, my kids happier and I really am enjoying these long school days to myself. (shhh, don't tell anyone)

Whatever...I'm an oldest child and I don't think ANY of those behaviors apply to me...I'm nothing but perfection.

That looks like so much fun! Tell Eliza to plan another game night like that so Levi & I can join in the fun ;)

Yep... oldest child syndrome holds true for ME and my mother. Both teachers! Sounds like she is going to be a handful when she gets REALLY stubborn (16 years).

I am an oldest child / daughter and all those words describe me to a tee. Love the game she came up with. Curious about the banana on the ironing board. Was this some sort of consolation prize? Or was Zane simply having a snack in between spelling rounds? --ali

Oldest children and children who are born after a big space in the family (like you) are rule followers. Maybe thats why it is condusive to teaching. Love, from one oldest to another.
