Our family is enjoying, I mean enduring, I mean enjoying a new milestone--Braces! Our sweet Eliza got her braces put on this week. She is as sore as I remember my teeth being. The first night she had them on she woke us up in the middle of the night just sobbing and holding her face. Her mouth was so tender she couldn't lay her head on her pillow. I felt just like one of those old Chinese mothers who used to bind their daughters' feet so they could have a fruitful marriage. I wanted to run her back into the doctor's office and have them pull the braces off. Who cares about straight teeth! Just make my baby feel better! We have spent A LOT of time this week trying to find things that she can eat. (Don't ask me about the day I spent almost two hours and a half a tank of gas to get her lunch...) I have always heard parents bemoan the cost of orthodonture, but didn't realize that it roughly comes out to about the same as a monthly car payment...
The braces now are way cooler than when I got mine 25+ years ago. First, there aren't the huge silver bands on all the teeth, just the little brackets glued on. Also, the kids get to pick the colors of the rubber bands. Eliza's are a tasteful pink and teal, which will coordinate with roughly 95% of her wardrobe. Doesn't she look cute and grown up now!
